A Bit About Me

Hey there! My name is Mina Mohammadi, and I am a journalist who works with data. I am based in Istanbul, Turkey but I am originally from New York.

I am currently a grad student at the Oxford Internet Institute where I am studying… the internet. My current research project is on the market for internet circumvention tech in the Middle East but generally I love working in the intersection of AI ethics and journalistic freedom.I am also a proud member of the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association.

Before this, I was journalism-ing at a couple of different places. My last gig was at Google News Initiative where I worked as a data journalist. I also have bylines include NBC News, Arab American News, Politico New York, Uighur Human Rights Council, Salon.com, The Law and Crime Network: Brian Ross Investigates and CityLimits.

I have been working in journalism since 2018. I am a self proclaimed “veteran” of student journalism:

In my free time, I love to read ProPublica Investigations like laxatives, run, and play the harp. I also like learning new languages. Turkmen is my native tongue, but I am currently brushing up on Farsi, Turkish, and occasionally Spanish. Ask me about censorship and ethical tech, I’ll talk your ear off :)
